Exploring the Meaning of ‘Peace’

Peace. One simple word that carries a whole lot of meaning.

It can be used as a noun, a verb, and even as an interjection. What, you didn’t think I’d connect the parts of speech in here somehow?

But what exactly does ‘peace’ mean?

Let’s take a look at how ‘peace’ as a noun (a thing) is defined in a few different elementary-level online dictionaries, as these explanations were designed with young learners in mind.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
A state of quiet; freedom from upsetting thoughts or feelings; harmony in personal relations; an agreement to end a war.

Kids.Wordsmyth:
A state of freedom from war or conflict; a state of quiet or calm; civil order and safety.

Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries:
A situation or a period of time in which there is no war or violence in a country or an area; the state of being calm or quiet; the state of living in friendship with somebody without arguing.

It is clear that Dr. Montessori had a strong interest in the subject of peace as she designed her method of teaching with the idea of peace at its core.

She revolutionized education by pioneering the concept of peace education, a cornerstone of her philosophy. Through peace education, she aimed to instill values of empathy, cooperation, and conflict resolution in children, fostering a more harmonious world.

Montessori Peace Quotes in Elementary Learning

As a Montessori teacher, I firmly believe that introducing concepts of peace can deeply influence the receptive minds of elementary students.

That’s why I often used quotes from famous figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Maria Montessori in my lessons and follow up activities.

In fact, I would post a quote on the whiteboard every morning for my students to ponder. These quotes motivate students to think more deeply about their actions and how they can contribute towards creating a better world.

A photo of two hands holding a small chalk board with the Montessori-aligned peace quote, "Be the change you wan to see in the world."

By sharing a quote every day, I hope to encourage my students to think about the world around them and what they can do to improve it. These quotes were used to inspire students to become agents of change in their own lives and in society as a whole.

Quotes are powerful. They stop and make you think. Just what the second plane child, the elementary student, is looking for. An opportunity to ask questions and learn!
